Tricks and Traps in Succession Planning for the Family Owned Business According to a recent survey by The Alternative Board, 45% of business owners say that their children are directly involved in their business, but 56% say that they are unhappy with their succession plan or have no succession plan in place.  This presentation focused on the unique challenges of working with family business owners on their succession plans, including practical approaches to common problems and learn how life insurance and annuity products create valuable solutions for the family owned business.

Enterprise University Succession Planning Strategies at Enterprise University. Affinity Law Group partner Kathleen Bilderback presented this course providing an overview of succession planning options for the closely held business. Sales to existing business partners, third party sales, management buy-outs and sales to Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs) were reviewed and discussed. At the end of this workshop, business owners were able to: (A) assess their individual readiness for succession planning, (B) distinguish between the various planning options available to them, and (C) understand the next steps to move from assessment to implementation.

Kathleen is a member of the Missouri, Illinois and Pennsylvania Bars as well as an active member of the American Bar Association and the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis. She is a nationally recognized speaker, author and an adjunct professor in the LLM program at Washington University's School of Law.  The program provided an overview of the key tax, legal and process issues raised for donors and charitable organizations in connection with a variety of gifting strategies including donor advised funds, bequests and life income gifts.
